Mitsubishi to share ASX/RVR with PSA cars wallpapers and previews
While details are limited, the Peugeot and Citroën models will be launched in early 2012 in Europe. They will feature unique styling and available in both front an all-wheel drive.

The deal has benefits for both companies: PSA gets an already-developed vehicle for a growing market segment, while Mitsubishi benefits from economies of scale resulting from the 100,000 extra cars it expects to make for Citroen and Peugeot each year

Mitsubishi CGS at Geneva

Mitsubishi has revealed the first details of the Concept Global Small, which will make its debut at March’s Geneva International Motor Show.

Possibly a replacement for the Colt, the five-seat CGS isn’t a bad looking thing. But the big news is its efficiency, with sub-100 g/km CO2 emissions being promised.

Such a low level has come about by the use of a relatively small engine of 1.0 to 1.2 litre capacity, regenerative braking, a stop-start system, low rolling resistance tyres, weight minimisation and careful attention to the aerodynamics.

The production version of the Mitsubishi Concept Global Small will be built in Thailand, with manufacturing set to start in March 2012.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400Mitsubishi has unveiled the Lancer Evolution X FQ400. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400 is powered by 2.0-litre turbocharged MIVEC lightweight aluminum engine that has been upgraded and develops 403bhp and 387lb.ft of torque on offer from just 3,500rpm. The top speed of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400 is limited to the same 155mph, but the 0 to 62 mph acceleration time has dropped to 3.8 seconds which makes it the fastest Evolution lineup yet.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400 also comes with the 18-inch lightweight, nine spoke alloy wheels it’s possible to see the Alcon brakes on the front, while the Toyo Proxes R1R tires underline the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400’s potency with their aggressive ‘cut slick’ tread pattern. Inside, the driver is held tightly against the FQ400’s sensational accelerative, braking and cornering forces in Recaro bucket sports seats, the range-topping Lancer Evolution X also gaining an Mitsubishi Evo X FQ400 liveried handbrake handle and carbon fiber gearknob.

Mitsubishi ASX

Mitsubishi ASXThe Mitsubishi ASX is the European-spec version of the Japanese Mitsubishi RVR, which is slated to go on sale in Japan from February 2010. MMC’s new compact crossover will seat 5 and will be sequentially introduced in European countries from late spring 2010, aimed at expanding MMC’s passenger car footprint in the region, following in the footsteps of the larger and recently redesigned Outlander mid-size crossover.

Mitsubishi ASXAmongst other available powertrains, the Mitsubishi ASX European-spec version will be fitted with an all-new Euro 5-compliant 1.8L turbocharged direct-injection diesel engine jointly developed by MMC and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and will feature “Automatic Stop & Go” technology. Together with a 6-speed manual transmission, this combination will provide high environmental efficiency.

Mitsubishi Eclipse

Mitsubishi EclipseThe Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe, however, just can't keep up with the latest sport coupes and hot hatches. Pros, Avant-garde styling, one of the few convertibles in its price range, powerful V6 in GT, comfortable front seats, relatively roomy cargo area. Cons, Poor outward visibility with convertible, sluggish acceleration with GS models, torque steer with GT, small backseat, no telescoping wheel, lackluster interior quality.

The dearth of similarly priced convertibles makes the Eclipse Spyder worth a look. The base Mitsubishi Eclipse gets a price reduction for 2011 and standard alloy wheels. Heated leather front seats and a power driver seat are now standard on the GS Sport. The GT can no longer be had with a manual transmission. All Eclipse coupes get a blacked-out roof.

Mitsubishi EclipsePowertrains and Performance
Every Mitsubishi Eclipse is front-wheel drive. GS models are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 162 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The GS comes standard with a five-speed manual, while a four-speed automatic is optional on the GS and standard on the GS Sport. Estimated fuel economy with the automatic is 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined.

The Eclipse GT gets a 3.6-liter V6 good for 265 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic is standard. This engine requires premium fuel and its estimated fuel economy is 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.

Safety
The Eclipse comes standard with four-wheel antilock brakes, stability control and front seat side airbags. The coupe features front side curtain airbags and the Spyder gets taller side airbags that cover occupants' heads. There are no rear head restraints. The Eclipse Spyder received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's top rating of "Good" in both the frontal-offset and side crash tests.

Driving Impressions
For many drivers, the Mitsubishi Eclipse's driving dynamics may be a bit of a disappointment. The GT's V6 produces plenty of power, but getting all those horses to the pavement can often result in a large dose of wheelspin and torque steer. In contrast to the V6, the four-cylinder struggles with the Eclipse's heavy curb weight -- acceleration with the smaller engine could best be described as anemic.

Mitsubishi EclipseAnother item of contention would be the large turning circle, which necessitates many more multiple-point turns than with other vehicles. Overall handling should satisfy most drivers, but those with an appetite for performance would likely find inspiration in any number of competing sport coupes or hatchbacks. The Spyder exhibits a little more chassis flex over bumps than we'd like, but it's not enough to spoil an otherwise enjoyable driving experience.

Nine electric cars get grant

The UK’s Department for Transport has announced the first nine models that will be eligible for its Plug-in Car Grant.

Beginning in January 2011, the scheme will see buyers able to claim 25% off the list price (up to a maximum of £5,000) per qualifying vehicle. The government has allocated £43M for the grants up until the end of March 2012, with a review of the programme’s viability beyond that date scheduled for January 2012.

The nine are:

Manufacturer Model First UK Deliveries Price
Mitsubishi i-MiEV January 2011 £23,990 including grant
smart fortwo electric drive January 2011 TBC. Available to lease in limited volumes from January 2011 ahead of full series production starting in 2012
Peugeot iOn January 2011 Only available via four year lease at £415 plus VAT per month
Nissan Leaf March 2011 £23,990 including grant
Tata Vista EV March 2011 TBC
Citroën CZero Early 2011 Only available via four year lease at £415 plus VAT per month
Vauxhall Ampera Early 2012 £28,995 including grant
Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Early 2012 TBC. Currently only available to lease in limited volumes
Chevrolet Volt Early 2012 TBC

smart fortwo electric drive

Although it looks like there’ll be plenty for customers to choose from, the choice isn’t as wide as it first appears. The Peugeot and Citroën are essentially re-badged versions of the Mitsubishi, while the Ampera shares its underpinnings with the Volt.

Peugeot iOn

Business Minister Mark Prisk said: “Today’s news that motorists will be able to choose from at least nine cars under the consumer incentive scheme… will further reinforce the message that the UK is Europe’s leading producer of ultra low carbon vehicles."

Unfortunately the last part of that particular statement shouldn’t be taken at face value just yet. The only model on the list that is definitely confirmed for UK production is the Nissan Leaf. However, domestic manufacturing will only start in 2013, with cars being imported from Japan until then.

Meanwhile, GM Europe has yet to decide whether the Vauxhall Ampera will be built at Ellesmere Port in England, but it has confirmed that the Ampera’s UK price will be £28,995 after the Plug-in car Grant has been applied.

Vauxhall Ampera

A surprising inclusion is the Tata Vista EV, mainly because it’s an unknown quantity in the UK. Apparently it has been developed from the Indica Vista, the previous version of which was the basis for the almost universally unloved and derided CityRover.

Tata Indica Vista

Tata Motors European Technical Centre in Warwick has been involved in the project, and the rumour is that the Vista EV may be built in the UK. A location has yet to be disclosed so, unless there has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes, an on-sale date of March 2011 seems very optimistic unless the initial cars are going to be imported from India. And then there’s the slight issue of not having a dealer network to sell through. Maybe Tata will use the showrooms of its Jaguar and Land Rover subsidiaries?

Mitsubishi Delica D:5 2.0

Mitsubishi Delica D:5 2.0Exterior
The bow-tied designers and engineers at Mitsubishi have certainly worked hard to come up with lines that are bold yet pleasant on the eyes for the exterior of this huge car. The dimensions are still those of a boxy van but the designers have managed to make it attractive, thanks to several eye-catching details on the front and rear ends.

Mitsubishi Delica D:5 2.0Styling wise, the boxy-designed car carrying the 2.0-litre DOHC MIVEC engine is similar to the Hummer fascia when viewed from the front. The clean lines and smooth surfaces that combine well with chunky alloys and chromed front grill give the D:5 a very handsome look, setting it apart from the rest of its competitors.

It is also this powerfully crafted vertical bar grille that joins the headlamps together in a straight band to project a wide, purposeful look, allowing the big square-like headlamps to be a good match for the oversized body.

The rear end shares a similar treatment with the combination lamps and tailgate garnish running the full width of the rear in a single band in a frill-free and clean design. Similar to the front bumper, the rear one also came in metallic grey, which was a perfect match to the white pearl colour of the test car.

Of course, if this doesn't suit your taste, the D:5 also comes in a two-tone cosmic blue body with metallic grey bumpers or the warm white pearl body with the cool silver bumpers.

The Mitsubishi Delica D:5 presents a striking road-presence with a boxy body sitting on large wheels and tyres. And with the linear styling treatment, it produces an ageless exterior design that readily communicates its functional qualities.

Interior
The new D5 is a huge car and a sneak peak at any picture should convince you. But what completely did for me was stepping inside.

This car is designed to welcome eight occupants in excellent conditions of comfort. No doubt that other cars can also achieve what Mitsubishi has pulled off for the D:5, but the quality of the seats and overall space in this big papa is unrivalled.

The interior's functional space allows for larger baggage and other items. And although the third row seats don't fold as easily as those in the best MPVs, it doesn't take long for one to figure it out. A couple of steps of lifting and hooking the seats and the job is done, increasing the depth from 1200mm to 1610mm.

Inside, the futuristic silver centre console with three circular knobs that control the air-conditioner give the cabin bags of character. Neat and convenient touches such as the powered sliding side doors and electric tailgate can also be controlled from the dash and the key fob - something very similar to the Toyota Estima.
One of the relaxing features that is available for the rear passengers is the availability of the multimedia DVD entertainment system. A video screen with DVD player is located at the top of the second row bench and is easily accessible to all rear passengers.

Moreover, ceiling lights at the front makes the cabin a very soothing place to be. Not only will the occupants' minds be at ease with the comfortable and spacious interior, long trips will no longer be boring.

Mitsubishi has undoubtedly created a cabin that appears to cocoon the occupants and instil a reassuring sense of being safely protected.

The Drive
On the go, the D:5 is surprisingly surefooted and cushy. The 2.0-litre DOHC MIVEC engine, producing 150bhp of power and 197Nm of torque, provides good accelerations when and wherever you need it, from highways to sloping roads.

Due to the stature of the car, the ride is decidedly comfort-biased. It is almost like a grand tourer that dishes out well-insulated, fatigue-free jaunts across long distance driving.

Additionally, the steering (with audio controls) is relatively precise and with the MIVEC engine teaming up with the INVECS III six-speed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), it makes driving in heavy traffic easier and less stressful.

While the D:5 is prone to body roll around fast corners, tyre grip is decent. And if you decide to press on, the nose will run wide. Moreover, engine noise can be a tad loud during acceleration but once the gigantor is cruising along the highway, it settles down nicely. Nonetheless, the D:5 is composed, and its tall driving position means great visibility.

Conclusion
The Mitsubishi Delica D:5 is certainly functional when it comes to space management and delivery purposes. So if you ever intend to look for a vehicle that can haul eight passengers with ease, you know where to look for one. This is a vehicle that climbs, crawls, and gets you where you need to be - in a safe manner.

US to get wider i-MiEV

Mitsubishi will be unveiling a wider, squatter version of its i-MiEV electric car at this month’s Los Angles Auto Show.

Designed exclusively for the US market, the official line is that the upsizing is being done to satisfy the country’s more stringent crash tests. It definitely, absolutely, categorically has nothing to do with rumours that some Americans might be a bit large.

The ‘narrow’ i-MiEV has an anticipated range of 100 miles (160 km) and a top speed of 80 mph (130 km/h). There’s no word yet on whether the bigger body will affect that performance, but an added benefit of the changes is that the US-spec i-MiEV will have a wider dash, and that surely means extra space to fit bigger cup holders?

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is due to go on sale in the US late next year with a price tag of under $30,000, before the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles is applied.

2011 Subaru WRX STI

When it was first introduced a couple of years ago, some thought the new generation Impreza lacked visual impact. Not only was it sold as a five-door hatchback in the UK, but the rather anonymous styling meant that telling the performance versions from their more mundane siblings could be hard.

Hence the 2011 Subaru WRX STI Type UK, which has been designed to address those criticisms. It gets a proper boot for the first time (the hatch version remains on sale too) and wider wheel arches, but it loses the Impreza name. According to Subaru, the WRX STI has become a model in its own right.

The WRX STI was never going to be a particularly pretty car, and the saloon is crying out for a decent boot lid spoiler to help balance its proportions, but the update appears to have been generally successful. The changes are more than skin deep, though.

A stiffer body than before has allowed longer travel suspension to be fitted, which improves both ride quality and road holding. Based on the ‘Spec C’ set up, the revised chassis has been combined with a lower ride height and wider tyres to further improve driver feedback and control.

Unsurprisingly, there’s a turbocharged boxer engine under the bonnet. Still with a capacity of 2.5 litres, it has now been cleaned up to meet Euro 5 emissions standards. Power remains at 295 bhp (220 kW / 300 PS), with a very healthy 407 Nm of torque available at 4,000 rpm. Subaru claims the way in which that torque is delivered has been improved, meaning that there’s a better throttle response and more linear acceleration.

0-62 mph (100 km/h) takes just 5.2 seconds, while top speed is still restricted to 155 mph (250 km/h). Fuel economy isn’t too brilliant though, with the WRX STI managing just 26.9 mpg (10.5 l/100km) on the combined cycle. CO2 emissions of 324 g/km mean that the Subaru doesn’t quite make it into the top tier for UK road tax purposes, but nevertheless it’s in Band L which will set the owner back £425 each year.

For 2011, the WRX STI’s all-wheel drive system has been upgraded, and the differentials now have revised settings. Torque is sent 41% front / 59% rear by default, but this can be altered via the four-mode Driver’s Control Centre Differential system. Also adjustable is the electronic stability control - or Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control in Subaru-speak - which lets the driver decide how intrusive it is.

As part of the revisions, the interior gets better materials for a more quality feel, and there are new Recaro seats for the driver and passenger. Standard equipment for 2011 includes Bluetooth telephone connectivity, climate control, ten-speaker audio with USB and AUX input jacks, cruise control and keyless entry.

The Subaru WRX STI is available in the UK now and costs £33,405 OTR for either the saloon or hatchback versions.

That price would usually be comparable to its archrival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR FQ-300. However, significant reductions across all of the Evo X range mean that the GSR FQ-300 can currently be had for £28,804 and, unluckily for Subaru, that’s a big saving.
