2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

When the all-new Dodge Charger was announced last October, there was one thing absent from the range: a high performance SRT version.



That omission has now been remedied with unveiling of the Charger SRT8 at the Chicago Auto Show, which opens to the public on 11 February.

As expected, power comes from a Hemi V8, although capacity has been enlarged to 6.4 litres (392 cubic inches) allowing it to now produce 465 bhp (346 kW / 471 PS). Torque has risen too, with 630 Nm (465 lb/ft) available.



Consequently, Dodge estimates that the Charger SRT8 should be good for a sub-five second 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time and a 175 mph (281 km/h) top speed.



The engine is hooked up to a W5A580 five-speed automatic gearbox which, for the first time on an SRT vehicle, comes with paddle shifters. For those not keen on such innovations, the good news is that a floor-mounted gear stick remains.

Although no fuel consumption figures have been released, Dodge is keen to emphasise the mileage-enhancing features of the Charger SRT8. The most significant is a four-cylinder running mode for the engine, which will now be able to operate over a wider rev range thanks to an active valve exhaust system.



To help deal with the increased power an adaptive damping system is fitted, but this can be manually overridden by switching between ‘Auto’ and ‘Sport’ modes. The steering has also been beefed up and recalibrated to give a more direct feel.

Styling-wise, the Charger SRT8 is said to be ‘aggressive’ - a description that few would argue with given that reworked front grille and bonnet. Other unique features include new front and rear bumper valances, a larger rear spoiler, side skirts and 20” polished aluminium alloy wheels.



On the inside, the front seats - which are both heated and ventilated - have perforated suede inserts and more substantial side bolstering to keep their occupants in place. An 8.4” touch screen dominates the dashboard and, for the SRT8, it can display ‘Performance Pages’. These bring up data items such as g-force, quarter-mile time, 0-60 mph time, braking performance and various engine parameters.



The 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 is due to go on sale in North America during autumn 2011.

The 2010 model year marks the end of the line of the second generation Dodge Viper, and most likely total the end of the snake. Power transmission for 2010 Dodge Viper Coupe is a completely crazy 8.4-liter V10 engine that roars at 600 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque. This engine starts Viper mass from zero to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds with the light on the quarter mile in 11.6 in a single second to 125.7 mph. Despite its low weight, we found CAB to be a little faster. Top speed is a claimed 200 mph. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, which is the only transmission available. Fuel economy – but obviously after the fact that the exotic sports cars – saving an estimated EPA of 13 mpg city / 22 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined.

Access to the driver’s seat can be challenging for some. Because the exhaust side of the marks, the side rails can become hot enough to burn the calves, the best drivers and find that the rather small opening of the door makes entry and exit. Those whose bottom is wider than the average can also find the seats a little uncomfortable tight.

The overall design of the interior of the Viper is pretty sad, but it may brighten a bit with the optional two-tone colors and dashboard inserts. Gauges in black and white face are easy to read and well positioned. The speedometer is mounted in the center of the large instrument module, next to the speedometer 220-mph-max. The center console seat additional gauges, audio system with CD player, air conditioning and a juicy red button Start to start the V10. We will avoid the optional navigation system because it is an older model with a smaller screen and picky, unintuitive controls.

The best safety equipment for the 2010 Dodge Viper Coupe is not included in the car. E ‘skill of the driver, preferably racing pedigree. What is, however, antilock brakes are massive 14-inch rotors which can stop the Viper 60 km / h in one eye swollen-104 feet. Conspicuous by their absence are the side airbags, traction and stability control – skills that make driving even more critical.

Fiat Freemont unveiled

Following December’s announcement that the revised 2011 Dodge Journey would be rebadged as a Fiat for European markets, the first details of the new Freemont MPV have now been released.



Visually, the result is just a Journey with some Fiat badges stuck on, with no attempt at a redesign apart from revised bumper valances. There’s even what looks like the remnants of Dodge’s trademark crosshairs grille up front.

Not that that matters, of course, because the two vehicles will never be sold alongside each other. It helps that the Journey isn’t a bad looking thing to start with and, importantly for Fiat, the conversion method used is simple, quick and cheap.



The Freemont will only be offered in two trim levels, with both featuring keyless entry, triple-zone automatic climate control, tyre pressure monitoring, cruise control, trip computer, fog lights and a touch-screen radio with colour screen and steering wheel controls.



Seven seats will be standard too, although the third row can be folded down below floor level when not in use.



Customers going for the higher spec model will also get Bluetooth telephone connectivity, 17” alloy wheels, electric fold-in door mirrors, roof bars, darkened rear windows, automatic headlights, rear parking sensors and a better radio with a larger screen, SD card reader and DVD compatibility.



As expected, the engine line-up will be mainly diesel powered. When sales begin during the second half of 2011, buyers will be able to choose from either a 138 bhp (102 kW / 140 PS) or 167 bhp (125 kW / 170 PS) MultiJet turbo diesel motor. Both are 2.0 litre units which will be combined with a manual gearbox to drive the front wheels.



It’s planned that all-wheel drive versions with standard automatic transmission will become available later. These will have either the 167 bhp MultiJet engine or Chrysler’s 272 bhp (202 kW / 276 PS) 3.6 litre Pentastar petrol V6.



Unfortunately, no performance, economy or emissions figures for the Freemont have been published. Likewise, Fiat has yet to confirm prices.

In second place was the Hyundai Sonata, which received 163 points. Third went to the electric car that took the 2011 European Car of the Year award, the Nissan Leaf. It picked up 94 points.



Meanwhile, the 2011 North American Truck of the Year is the Ford Explorer, which earned 253 points. It comfortably beat the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which scored 138 points from the jury. The Dodge Durango, with 99 points, was third.

Journey becomes a Fiat

Dodge will stop offering its Journey in Europe, choosing instead to market the vehicle as the Fiat Freemont on this side of the Atlantic.

Such a move comes as no surprise. Indeed, when Fiat Group Automobile unveiled its 2010-2014 Business Plan earlier this year, it was made clear that for Dodge ‘outside of the US, only models consistent with the strong American image of the brand, such as the Challenger, Charger and Viper, will be distributed. In addition, some products will be gradually integrated with the Fiat brand in Europe…’



The good news for potential Freemont customers is that Dodge gave the Journey an extensive overhaul for the 2011 model year. Changes included retuning the suspension for improved ride and handling, recalibrating the steering for more feel and increasing the soundproofing for more refinement.

Interior quality - arguably a factor that has prevented recent Chrysler Group products from performing better in Europe - received attention too, and Dodge is now claiming ‘world-class levels of craftsmanship and comfort’ for the Journey. If true, that should help the Freemont succeed in an extremely competitive market sector.



North American buyers can currently specify either a 173 bhp (129 kW / 175 PS) 2.4 litre I4 or 283 bhp (211 kW / 286 PS) 3.6 litre V6 Pentastar engine for their Journey, both of which are petrol-powered. It’s unclear whether these will also make it into the Freemont, but a 168 bhp (125 kW / 170 PS) 2.0 litre diesel engine from Fiat is a certainty. To help extend the Freemont’s appeal, expect all-wheel drive to be offered as an option, as it is for the Journey.



The Freemont, which will be built alongside the Dodge Journey in Toluca, Mexico, replaces the ancient and slow-selling Ulysse MPV. Originally introduced back in 2002, the Ulysse shares its underpinnings with the Lancia Phedra, Citroën C8 and Peugeot 807.



Sales of the Fiat Freemont are due to begin in June 2011, following a debut at next March’s Geneva International Motorshow.

SEMA 2010: Dodge Challenger SRT8 392

One of the 1,492 Challenger SRT8 392s that Dodge says it's going to build next year is menacing the corner of the Mopar booth at this year's SEMA show. With a new 6.4-liter V8 offering 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque under the hood, this muscle machine appears ready to tame the road.

The SRT8 392 should prove to perform significantly better than previous Challengers thanks to quicker steering, revised suspension settings, beefier shocks and added downforce. The wheels are also a treat. Plus, you'll get better gas mileage than in the 2010 Challenger – that is, if you manage to scoop one up before everyone else.

Challenger’s new engines

Going against the grain of downsizing, Dodge has revealed that the Challenger SRT8 will be getting a bigger Hemi V8 for 2011.



And, just so everyone knows, it’ll be known as the SRT8 392 - a reference to the engine’s capacity in cubic inches, which equates to 6.4 litres.

The new engine boasts 470 bhp (350 kW / 476 PS) and 637 Nm (470 lb/ft) of torque which, compared to the 6.1 litre Hemi that it replaces, is a useful increase of 45 bhp (33 kW / 45 PS) and 67 Nm (50 lb/ft). The newer model will be identifiable by its modified front spoiler and larger splitter, while underneath the suspension has been tweaked to cope with the extra grunt.



To celebrate the new arrival, the first 1,492 SRT8 392s off the line will be Inaugural Edition models which have 20” SRT wheels and ‘392 Hemi’ badges. Colour choice is Bright White Clear Coat with Viper Blue stripes or Deep Water Blue with Stone White stripes, both of which come with a Pearl White leather interior that features blue stitching.



The 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 is scheduled to arrive in dealers during the fourth quarter of 2010.



It’s not just the Hemi that’s been revised, though. The V6 models are set to get the new Pentastar engine that was first introduced in the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It’ll also be seen in the Dodge Charger, Avenger, Durango and Journey, as well as the Chrysler Town and Country, 200 and 300.



Using one engine across so many models is all about manufacturing efficiency and cost saving. Incredibly, the Pentastar will eventually replace seven legacy V6 engines, and it’s expected that it’ll be found in a third of all Chrysler Group vehicles built.



Power and torque will be tuned for specific applications, and in the 2011 Challenger it’ll break the 300 bhp barrier. 305 bhp (227 kW / 309 PS) to be exact, which is a big increase versus the 250 bhp (186 kW / 253 PS) that today’s car has. Torque is also up, from 338 Nm (250 lb/ft) to 363 Nm (268 lb/ft).

New for 2008 are striking exterior and interior enhancements that bear signature Dodge styling cues while creating a new persona for Dakota.

Powertrain selections
Dodge trucks have always earned a reputation as bold, powerful and capable. The powerful and capable parts of the equation in the 2008 Dodge Dakota begin with powertrain choices, which include a new V-8 engine -- the only V-8 option available in the mid-size pickup segment.

The new 4.7-liter V-8 offers better fuel economy, power and torque than the previous 4.7-liter High Output engine, while at the same time delivering improvements in refinement. The new 4.7-liter V-8 incorporates two spark plugs per cylinder (the only Chrysler Group engine to do so, other than the 5.7-liter HEMI), increased compression ratio, improved cylinder-head port flow and a new combustion system. The result is 290 horsepower, a 25 percent increase; and 320 lb.-ft. of torque, a 10 percent increase. The new engine is also capable of operating on E85 ethanol fuel, making the Dodge Dakota equipped with this engine a Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV).

Refinement improvements in the new 4.7-liter V-8 result from significant revisions to the induction system, a lightweight piston/rod assembly and reduced accessory drive noise through lower accessory drive speed. Engine smoothness at idle is enhanced with a new valve-lash adjuster system. The new 4.7-liter V-8 is also equipped with Electronic Throttle Control.

The new 2008 Dodge Dakota comes standard with a 3.7-liter Magnum V-6 engine producing 210 horsepower and 235 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine also comes with Electronic Throttle Control for positive throttle response, and exhaust gas recirculation to help lower emissions.

The new 2008 Dodge Dakota's powerplants are backed up by a choice of a six-speed manual transmission, standard on all V-6 equipped 2008 Dodge Dakota models except Laramie; a four-speed automatic with overdrive available with Dakota's V-6 engine; and a five-speed automatic available on V-8-equipped models.

For more capability when traction is at a premium, the new 2008 Dodge Dakota may be equipped with a transfer case featuring two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with locked high and low ranges, or an available transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive as well as selections for locked high and low ranges. The 2007 Dodge Dakota is the only pickup in its segment to offer full-time four-wheel drive.

In addition to powerful and capable, Dodge trucks are also known as bold.
For that part of the equation, the 2008 Dodge Dakota's exterior includes a newly styled hood, grille, front fascia, rear spoiler, fenders and headlamps. The front end has been designed to improve aerodynamics and features better fit and gap management. The hood surface was designed to signify power and further amplify the drop-fendered, signature look for Dodge trucks. With these styling enhancements, the "face" of the 2008 Dodge Dakota is better aligned with the rest of the Dodge truck lineup.

Like the Dodge Nitro, headlamps are rectangular units primarily for a contemporary appearance, but also to maximize the surface area for better forward lighting. Reflectors are deep-set behind each lense to achieve a serious demeanor.

All-new fascias better integrate with the restyled grille and incorporate fog lamps. The 2008 Dodge Dakota's tailgate includes a new spoiler that helps smooth air flow over the rear of the truck to improve fuel economy, and the top surface of the cargo box has a new protective surface.

Interior loaded with form and function
The 2008 Dodge Dakota Extended Cab's Full Swing rear access doors open nearly 170 degrees - unique in the segment -- to an interior with class-leading room and seating for five. With rear seats folded, up to 30 cubic feet of storage space is available. A total of six storage hooks are located on the Extended Cab's rear interior panel.

Separately, the 2008 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab best-in-class room - 37.1 cubic feet -- and seating for up to six. With rear seats folded, a new under-seat storage system, a first for Dodge Dakota, is easily accessible. This system includes a unique, collapsible and removable cargo management system that enables gear to be organized and taken anywhere.

Other storage options are provided throughout the interior. For example, an additional storage bin is located above the glove box, providing easy access for everyday items. An all-new center console incorporates cup holders with modular inserts and a pull-out bin specifically designed to hold electronics such as an MP3 player (which can be plugged into any of the 2007 Dodge Dakota's audio systems), cell phone or Personal Digital Assistant. An additional power outlet is also provided.

Electronic choices include AM-FM stereo radios with MP3 capability and available SIRIUS Satellite Radio that delivers more than 125 channels of music, sports, news, talk and weather. Also available as stand-alone options are a 508-watt SoundBox system (available on Extended Cab models) and a DVD navigation system with turn-by-turn directions. A power accessory delay, standard on all 2008 Dodge Dakotas, allows power functions, including radio, to operate after the vehicle is turned off.

Dodge Dakota = versatility
The foundation of the new 2008 Dodge Dakota is a ladder-type frame, with main rails formed to precision tolerances under liquid pressure and fully boxed for strength and rigidity. All 2008 Dodge Dakotas feature independent front suspension with coil-over shock absorbers. The result is identical ride height for two- and four-wheel-drive models, which contributes to smooth ride and handling characteristics.

The 2008 Dodge Dakota continues to offer the largest and longest standard cargo bed in its class: 6-foot-6-inches in the Extended Cab. Built-in utility rails make cargo box tie-downs infinitely adjustable. The 2008 Dodge Dakota's dual-position tailgate may be secured in a mid-position, which provides support for extra-wide or -long cargo laid on top of wheel wells and extending beyond the end of the bed.

The new 2008 Dodge Dakota also continues to wear the crown for highest tow ratings in the mid-size pickup market, with towing ability of up to 7,050 pounds.

As a complete package, the 2008 Dodge Dakota is as safe as it is capable and versatile. Up front, octagonal front frame rail tips collapse rearward in an impact in order to absorb energy and deter force from the cabin. An anti-lock brake system is standard on rear wheels, and available on all four wheels.

The Dodge Challenger Targa is a full-blown competition car that raced and completed the infamous Targa Newfoundland race this year. "Samantha" started life as a Mopar Challenger drag race package car. Many features were borrowed from the Dodge Viper, but the most noticeable is the snakeskin green paint. To keep the front end down, a Mopar chin spoiler "Splats" developed in a full scale wind tunnel, was added to the front of the car. Mopar gauges keep a close eye on the vital signs.

The Mopar hood is equipped with a scoop to make room for the 540-horsepower, 490 lb. ft. of torque, 392 HEMI V-8 Mopar crate motor. Mated to a Tremec six-speed manual gearbox, the engine blasts power to the rear wheels. An abundance of fade resistant stopping power comes from Stop-Tech brakes.

Up front, the six-piston calipers clamp 380-millimetre rotors, while in the rear, four-pot calipers work with 355-mm rotors. Developed by KW, the race suspension and brake upgrades came from a proven hero — the Dodge Viper ACR, which just broke the production car lap record at the world-renown Nurburgring in Germany. With only a few exceptions, the Dodge Challenger Targa was built using parts available through Mopar.

2011 Dodge Charger

Dodge has announced the arrival of an all-new 2011 Charger.

The ‘Coke bottle’ styling remains, although it’s less pronounced than before, and there are now large scallops along the body sides. Continuing the theme, the aluminium bonnet also features dual scallops which replace the single air intake of the previous version.



Like the recently revealed 2011 Durango, the Charger also gets the new-style Dodge crosshair grille. But it’s around the back that the most striking change has taken place, an array of LED tail lights which is designed to accentuate the wide stance of the car.



Interior quality was an area where the old generation Charger didn’t score too highly. Bravely, though, Dodge is saying that ‘premium’ and ‘world class’ materials have been used inside the 2011 model. Less bravely, though, it hasn’t released any interior images yet - a strange tactic that was also deployed when the updated Durango was first unveiled.



In a further effort to enhance refinement, Dodge engineers spent a lot of time improving the sound quality within the Charger’s cabin. This was achieved by isolating wind, engine and road noise, together with other measures that included injecting the body cavities with silencing foam and fitting dual-pane acoustic glass to the windscreen and front doors. As a result, the bold claim is that the Charger will now stand comparison against the best in its class.



In SE and Rallye spec the 2011 Charger is powered by a new 3.6 litre Pentastar engine, while the R/T gets the familiar 5.7 litre Hemi V8. All-wheel drive is also available for the R/T, and the system features front axle disconnect. That basically means the car remains rear-wheel drive until extra traction is needed, at which point the AWD system kicks in automatically.



There is a faint glimmer of hope that the Charger could make it across to Europe, as Fiat’s 2010-2014 business plan said of Dodge that ‘Outside of the US, only models consistent with the strong American image of the brand, such as the Challenger, Charger and Viper, will be distributed.’



If the car is as good as Dodge says it is, it would be a shame if it wasn’t exported. Ominously though, the launch of the 2011 Charger coincides with the company ceasing to offer cars in the UK. The Journey, which was the only model still being sold here, has just been withdrawn.



In North America, the 2011 Dodge Charger will go on sale during the fourth quarter of 2010. Pricing has yet to be confirmed.

Dodge Challenger SRT10 in 2011?

I went to the SEMA show in Las Vegas back in 2008 and one of the first cars I noticed there was a new Dodge Challenger dubbed the SRT10 concept. Obviously the SRT10 denotes that this particular Challenger packed the same 600 hp V10 hammer under the hood that came standard in Dodge’s Viper, but up until now actual production of this car has been just a rumor. Now, according to OntarioStreetCar.com we’re hearing that this V10 monster may actually see the light of day. We just posted that the new 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8′s 6.4-liter HEMI will pump out 475 hp, and while an impressive number it still falls short of Ford’s Shelby GT500 Mustang’s 550 hp. Combine this with news of a new high horsepower Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and Dodge has every reason to produce a car such as the Challenger SRT10.

As of right now there is no word if the car will be produced by Dodge or shipped off to a subcontractor like Roush Performance. Either way we really hope that Dodge has the stones to step up to the plate with this thing and give the boys of the blue oval and the Chevy bow-tie a real run for their money. Let’s just hope that pricing isn’t too far out of whack in comparison to the competition, because if that happens then all this hoopla and the car itself will just be an exercise in futility.

2012 Dodge Viper Preview

The last model for the current generation Dodge Viper has already rolled off the assembly line, but instead of crying about it, we can take comfort in knowing that the next generation has already been confirmed for production. News of this came when the future sports car was shown at a private Chrysler dealer conference this week.

Insiders at the event said that the next Viper will come with a more aggressive design, featuring all-new bodywork painted 25 times in candy-apple red. They also said the car’s look had moved away from its race-car roots and evolved into a more traditional sports car.

It is rumored that Chrysler will place an 8.4-liter V10 engine incorporating Fiat’s innovative Multiair technology under the hood. Rumors are also circulating that an entry-level V8 engine is also under consideration.

The next generation Viper should be a force to be reckoned with considering Dodge has asked for Ferrari’s assistance in the development of the new sports car. Ralph Gilles, Dodge CEO said that we should be seeing the next Dodge Viper in 2012. We can’t wait!

The novelty joins in a ruler of Ford's special cars and appears on the enterprise conveyor in Chicago next year. Tests of both cars were used by policemen of district Los Angeles and the State of Michigan.

Ford Explorer for US Policemen

Police Ford Explorer will be presented in all-wheel drive versions with the atmospheric 6-cylinder engine in volume of 3,5 litres and power of 280HP. Such motor is aggregated with a 5-step automatic transmission and is capable to work, both on usual gasoline, and on bioethanol E85. According to representatives of Ford, Explorer for 20 percent is more economic than the police sedans Crown Victoria.

The novelty received the strengthened body, more hardy suspender and the modernised brake gears, the new generator and a radiator, and also 18-inch wheel disks which for drop of expenses are unified with disks for police Ford Taurus. In off-road car interior there was a computer system with the nine-inch screen for access to a database, fastenings for the weapon, video registration systems, and also special closed compartments in a luggage compartment.

Besides Ford, the cars for police of the USA offer some more companies — Dodge (which prepared version Charger), Chevrolet (prepared for special services Caprice) and firm Carbon Motors which has developed own car.
